Love it or Leave it: Ikat and Suzani

{Image via The Decorista}

Ikat and Suzani textiles date back for centuries, but they have grown to be wildly popular in the design scene over the past several years. I recently saw some ikat trays at Target, so you know the designs have really permeated our culture! I personally love the look and haven’t tired of it. I love the bold colors, textures and design. While I love bold looks like the one in the photo above, I generally find it better to use ikat and suzani with a little restraint—some pillows here, a couple of tea towels there.

What are your thoughts? Are you still loving these ethnic textiles or are you ready to move on to something else? Love them or leave them?

I still love, but I think it is time to set them aside for awhile.

I depends... if you've asked me about the 1st picture, I'd say Leave it! Way too much, I'd never be able to live in a space like that, but I can see using some of the pieces in a different room, with much less color.

So, it's not LOVE or Leave it... it's really... a MAYBE. :-)

Have a wonderful day,

xo

I still am a huge ikat fan! Especially love it in the form of pillows or bedding.

I think a lot depends on how you use them..in moderation it always works..a statement cushion ..an upholstered chair..these are some things you can't tire of..to me these are classics..xx meenal

Personally, I love ikat prints but I am really selective about the designs. With that said, I think it's best used in small doses, maybe for a few decorative pillows, a pair of curtains, a table runner, a napkin or a small upholstered furniture like a bench or ottoman. Just a thought.

Love...in small doses, a print here, a print there, but not prints everywhere.

Love, but in moderation I think.

That is always the question! Are we over it? I hate when design classics like zebra rugs, parsons tables, greek key patterns, wicker, malachite, ikats or anything else become trendy. Mostly because I like all of these things. and don't want to move on. But yes, when it's trickled down to Target, I think it might be time. On the other hand, I have to constantly remind myself not to move on to what's next just to stay cutting edge. If I (or anyone) loves it they should enjoy it. I still have Ralph Lauren leopard pillows in my house from 15 years ago. And now they don't look trendy. Just classic.

Love it, but I agree a little goes a long way! Noticing the prints are appearing on the runways now, too.

YES to both! I agree about the small doses, as many have mentioned here. I just bought a suzani pillow last week so I am definitely not over it and have a hard time believing I ever will be!

I agree with you. A little goes a long way. I think most of these patterns are classic and will always look good, just with new twists and color combinations. I love, love, love the hot pink and turquoise tablescape.

i think they are fantastic still, but as accent pieces, such as table runners (2nd pic) or cushions....nothing permanent....

Love the colors - but I'm more than ready to leave the patterns behind. They have been too popular for too long now and probably about to become dated. btw - great post - am enjoying your blog!

A thing of beauty is a joy forever, it's as simple as that.
I don't plan on stashing my ikats or suzanis any time soon.

I love ethnic prints--I think it surpasses being a trend and can be timeless when it totally suits a person of the bohemain variety. LOVES it.

Leave it.

All things that are expressions of a culture are timeless. Overuse in commercial products is what does patterns in as well as using all trending motifs together- suzani, ikat, lacquer, Greek key, lucite, abstract art, chevrons. Ugg. Like the best outfits, the best rooms have soul because they layer what's current and what's classic, not just being an amalgamation of all the newest things. P.S. LDV rocks :)
