Reader Home: Hallie’s Creatively Chic Home

hallie Last week, after posting about my obsession with David Hicks’ La Fiorentina pattern, I received several e-mails from readers who wanted to share their own use of La Fiorentina with me. They were all gorgeous, but it was the image above, sent to me by Hallie, who recently moved to Houston that really piqued my interest. After thanking her for sharing the image of her La Fiorentina pillows, I asked to see more. I could tell she had amazing style and wanted to see what else her home had in store.

Hallie is a total sweetheart and agreed to send me more pictures of her place and let me tell you, it is fabulous! It is a great example of how to do a lot with a little since most of the items in Hallie’s home came from estate sales, antique shops, and flea markets. Hallie mixes high-end pieces, like her sofa from Jayson Home and Garden with vintage and inexpensive pieces to create a chic, layered space full of personality and style.

Here, Hallie gives us the inside scoop on her fabulous apartment!

hallie3 {I love this little table and was lucky enough to find it at Target this weekend for $39.99! Thanks for the tip, Hallie!}

The metal accent table was bought at Target. I love it, but I love the price even more!

hallie2 The rug is the Egeby sisal rug from Ikea. It's the best price for a sisal rug that I've found and I love the quality. The zebra cowhide rug was found on ebay. The sofa was purchased during the fall upholstery sale at Jayson Home & Garden. It was my first big furniture purchase, and I love it! And as you already know, I have Lee Jofa's La Fiorentina in the black and white colorway on my pillows!

 hallie5

{I am dying over Hallie’s fabulous lucite ottoman and turquoise leather stools!}

I designed and built the lucite ottoman in my furniture design studio class in college. My copy of "I Married Adventure" that sits on it is extra special to me. It belonged to my husband's grandmother, and she gave it to me for Christmas last year after hearing a "rumor" that I coveted it! The pair of stools were found at Lula B's Antique Mall in Dallas. They were originally used in the shoe department at the Downtown Neiman Marcus! I reupholstered them in a  Jerry Pair aqua leather that I had leftover from a previous project.

hallie8 The yellow dresser was another Lula B's find. The top was badly scratched, so I had a piece of mirror cut to place on top of it. I found the Blanc de Chine figurine at The Guild Shop in Houston and had it made into a lamp. The ceramic greyhound was also found at the same estate sale as the bamboo chair. I named him Winston!

hallie9

{This just may be my favorite little vignette in Hallie’s apartment. I love her use of gilded items, especially since they coexist with the cooler shades of her living room. The contrast is fabulous!}

hallie4

{Notice the fiberglass chairs on Hallie’s balcony.}

hallie7

The white bamboo dresser was purchased for under $100 at one of my favorite antique hunting spots in Oklahoma City: The Rink Gallery.

hallie6 The bamboo lattice back chair was found at an estate sale in Dallas via www.24-7estatesales.com (one of my favorite Dallas sources!). I painted it black and upholstered it in Schumacher's Zenyatta Mondatta. I like to think of it as my ode to Missoni.

hallie10

{Here, Hallie framed leftover Fornasetti wallpaper to give the same effect of using the much more expensive Fornasetti plates. I love the accessories she used in this niche.}

hallie11

I've used the Ikea Egeby sisal rug again. The lucite dining table base was another estate sale find. I found the piece of glass for it on Craigslist. The chairs were found at an antique store in Oklahoma City. I painted them white and reupholstered the cushions.

hallie12

The Chinoiserie screen was found at Diane Lee's consignment store in Oklahoma City. I found the bedding on BellaHomeFashions.com. It was a great price, and I was very pleased with the quality. Both lamps were purchased at antique stores in Savannah, when I lived there for graduate school. The gold sconces were my grandmother's.

hallie wedding

{The Beautiful Hallie on her Wedding Day in January}

Hallie received a Bachelors Degree in Interior Design from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Arts in Interior Design from the Savannah College of Art & Design. Upon graduation, she worked for a hospitality design firm in Dallas for almost two years. During that time, she also took on small side jobs. She is currently employed as a design assistant for a local Houston residential designer and absolutely loves it.

I asked Hallie to share her source of inspiration for her home and to tell us who her favorite designers are to which she answered: “The inspiration for my apartment was simple: just fill it with items that I love! Since my husband and I are currently renting, I wanted to select pieces that would transition easily into a new home in the future. I'm constantly inspired by the work of Kelly Wearstler, David Hicks, Jonathan Adler (and his sense of humor), Billy Baldwin, Jan Showers (my list could go on and on!). I would describe my taste as classic and modern with a dash of glamour! I love traditional pieces that will stand the test of time reinterpreted in a fun color or material, and I love incorporating modern, clean lined pieces into my decor!”. I feel like Hallie and I are kindred spirits. She is a girl after my own heart. I love her style!

Thank you, Hallie for sharing your gorgeous home with me and my readers. It has been such a treat!

Hallie has great taste indeed. Love the lucite ottoman. Any idea who made it? I agree to the dresser vignette is the best! Brilliant to put a mirror over the scratched top.

Thank you all for your kind and generous comments! I am truly speechless! I'm still pinching myself that Paloma was so sweet to post the photos of my apartment!

Chandelier...I would love to go thrifting!

I also made the lucite ottoman in my college model shop, so unfortunately, I no longer have access to the power tools I used to make it. (Quite a funny sight in itself!) I do know some fabricators in Houston that could custom produce it if anyone is interested!
