We're off to see the wizard...

Country Club Plaza in Kansas City
Well, not exactly, but we are heading to Kansas City in the morning to visit Fabian's sister and her husband for the weekend. I know we will miss Tate so much, but he will be in good hands with his grandparents. This month's feature on Kansas City in Elle Decor couldn't have come at a better time. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it looks like a great city! I think we are going to a Royals game, having some famous Kansas City barbecue, and visiting the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Union Station, and Country Club Plaza while we are there.

If you live in Kansas City or have visited recently, I would love to hear any suggestions you might have regarding things to see and restaurants.

Hello there! I lived in KC for 18 years :] Now I am in Phoenix, and while I love the desert, it just does not have the same charm.

As for recommendations...

If you like italian food go to Figlios, it's on the second story of a building on the Plaza and overlooks the park in the middle. It has incredible homemade pasta - the lasagna is fantastic! It is a fancier restaurant but if you go for lunch it's a bit more relaxed.

For cute little wine bars and live music go to the Power and Light district, and if you see a Sheridan's Frozen custard - all their custard is 95% fat free and AMAZING. I like the Mount Rushmore :]

In my opinion, Jack Stack has the best BBQ in the state - depending on where you are it may be a bit of a drive but it is SO WORTH IT. Make sure you call ahead to make reservations if it's a weekend as it gets really full. Be suuuure to choose the baked beans as one of your sides if you go, they are so good that we have them shipped out here on dry ice!

The Kemper Contemporary Art museum is fantastic - they have a wonderful permanent collection including 8 pieces by Frank Stella (a personal fav :])

You'll of course see all sorts of fountains as KC is "The City of Fountains" - there are more fountains there than any other city in the country (some say world but I've been to Italy and seen all of those so I'm skeptical!).

Can you tell I love KC? I'm getting nostalgic just typing this! Anyhow - I hope this helped, say hi to the Plaza for me!

I grew up in KC - it's really changed a lot in the past several years, you're in for a (surprising) treat!

As far as what to see:
- definitely stroll through the Plaza (lots of shopping and restaurants)
- take a drive through Mission Hills (along Ward Parkway near the Plaza - amazing homes)
- if have a free day and are willing to take a drive, Nell Hills in Atchinson, KS is an amazing design/decor store (she has another shop up near the airport too which is also great)
- go to the Nelson-Atkins Museum (or just take some pics on the green with the giant shuttlecocks)

I totally agree with Macy on the Jack Stack recommendation - great BBQ! If you can't get there, at least try Gates BBQ (they'll yell "Hi may I help you?!" at which you yell back "Beef on bun with fries!").

And the VisitKC.com is a great resource. Have a blast! :)

I hope I am not too late. Most of the posts I agree with. Definitely make sure to get some good BBQ in your belly (Jack Stack or Gates).

There is a really cute letterpress store on 110 Southwest Boulevard called HammerPress (hammerpess.net). I bought a Sigur Ros gig poster from there last month.

I dont know how long you are staying, but the Screenland Theater has an improv group every month or so roast classic pop movies. It is hilarious. July 10 and 11 they are making fun of ET.

Hope you have a great time in KC! And by the way, good Wizard of OZ joke- I've never heard that one before! (sarcasm.)
