Do Tell: What are you reading?

books Lo-boheme_Mike-Larson-3 - Copy

I’m always looking for new material to read, whether that means a great novel, a fascinating magazine article or an exciting new blog. I just picked up a copy of Water for Elephants to read on my flights to and from Palm Beach. I’ve heard good things about this book for a while and I figured I’d better get around to reading it before the movie comes out because we all know how that goes. The books are almost always better! So, do tell…what are you reading these days?

I just started reading "Eating Animals" by Jonathan Safran Foer. I wasn't sure what to expect but it's a great read. I would recommend it to everyone, meat eater or not!

I just finished Julia Child's memoir "My Life in France." It was such a great read, and she makes France sounds so lovely and charming. I also loved how it showed just how hard she worked on her book- definitely recommend it!

Oh boy... I read a lot and have many suggestions. First, I hope you love Like Water for Elephants. It's fantastic from what I remember. So here are a few suggestions: The Help by Kathryn Stockett; Immortal by Traci L. Slatton; With Violets by Elizabeth Robards; Dancing for Degas by Kathryn Wagner; Beneath a Marble Sky by John Shors. If you'd like more recommendations, I'd be happy to send more. Enjoy! PS: I tend to read historical fiction if that's your interest.

My kindle is my best friend 1) I commute daily downtown Chicago 20-30 mins each way 2) it's better than updating my status on FB. I usually read two books a week, and this week I started Kelly Cutrone's book "If You Have to Cry, Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You." "Water for Elephants" is on my list too!

I really liked Water for Elephants, but found that it took a while to get into - so stick with it, if you feel the same way. It's worth it!

I am re-reading The Golden Compass series (His Dark Materials), it's one of my favorite stories!! I highly recommend it. Sci-Fi and Fantasy is my genre of choice for reading. Also, I love re-reading books, you always find something new each time.

I loved Water for Elephants. Try Cutting for Stone. Don't read the blurb with what's it about because it did not sound at all interesting to me, but I adored the book,

I've read Water for Elephants and you are in for a treat! I just finished The Hunger Games and even though it is a Young Adult novel, it was FANTASTIC. I will definitely read the 2nd and 3rd books in the trilogy.

Total brain dead right now, and a tad busy. Last book I read about 2 months ago was Freakanomics. I majored in economics so a friend thought this would be funny and it was!

Really wanted to read that Julia Child's book will have to go get it!

I'm in a book club with friends and there have been lots of good reads lately! I just finished The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo...it's been out a long time, but is a great read! After finishing that, I got another book by him that I also really enjoyed - By the River Piedra I Sat Down & Wept. They're both pretty quick reads. The Help by Kathryn Sockett is another great one :). I've been meaning to check out Water for Elephants too! Enjoy your trip!

You'll love Water for Elephants; it's fantastic. My favorite semi-recent read, though, was The Elegance of the Hedgehog. So incredibly beautiful. It was also made into a (French) movie, which I really want to see when it's released in the US. Read it before that for sure!

Last night I finished rereading An Abundance of Katherines which I love because well written YA is my not-so-secret guilty pleasure. As another former high school teacher, you might enjoy it too.

I recently read "Juliet" by Anne Fortier. I have not been this excited about a book in quite some time. It was so wonderful I couldn't put it down.

I just finished "Blood, Bones, and Butter," the memoir by the chef/owner of Prune in New York City. It was really beautiful.

I need a good novel, but haven't been able to read anything since Franzen's "Freedom" - it spoiled me for fiction for a while.

I'm reading Heaven is For Real, about a little 4yo boy who "died" for 5 minutes during surgery and went to Heaven. This book is all about the things he saw in Heaven...it's amazing!

I would recommend without a doubt "SHADOWS OF THE WIND" originally written by a Spanish writer the book was translated into English and has made the best sellers list in the UK a few years back.

I give the book to me gran & aunt – both said it was the best book they read and we all like different genres.

I kept picking up Water for Elephants and read 30 pgs and couldn't get into it, but from the comments here it seems like I need to give it another try and some more time for it to pick up. I just finished a Jane Green novel-I like easy and quick reads for a plane ride, I always enjoy her books!

Freedom by Jonathan Franzen! It's big and a daunting at first, but it's totally worth it. I'm not a big fan of contemporary novels, but I think this one lives up to all the hype!

Just finished The Gilead by Marylynne Robinson - it is one of the best books I have read, beautifully written. When I finished reading it, I immediately went to page 1 and began reading it again. It is a book you will want in your library. It won the Pulitzer prize in 1995 or thereabouts.
